How to Pack 2 Weeks in a Carry-On: List, Method and Laundry Plan

To pack 2 weeks in a carry-on, pack for 7 days and plan one laundry stop around day 7. Choose clothes in two or three colors that all match, wear your bulkiest outfit on the plane, roll or compress the rest, and keep liquids to 3.4 oz containers in one quart-sized bag. Two pairs of shoes, total.

That's the whole method. The rest of this guide is the exact list with counts, the order to pack it in, and where a vacuum compression bag like the Flovir Air Pro actually saves room (and where it doesn't).

What size bag do you need for 2 weeks?

A standard US carry-on is enough if you do laundry once. American Airlines, for example, allows a carry-on of up to 22 x 14 x 9 inches including handles and wheels, plus a personal item up to 18 x 14 x 8 inches (aa.com, checked Oct 2026). Other airlines differ, so check yours in our personal item size by airline guide.

Weight is the second check. Most large US airlines don't publish a carry-on weight limit, but some international ones do. Lufthansa allows up to 8 kg, about 17.6 lb, for a carry-on in Economy fares that include one (lufthansa.com, checked Oct 2026).

2-week carry-on packing list (with counts)

This list assumes mild weather, one laundry day and one nicer dinner. "Worn" means it's on your body on travel day, not in the bag.

Item In the bag Worn on the plane Notes
Tops (t-shirts, blouses, knit shirts) 5 1 Knits and merino wrinkle less than cotton button-downs
Bottoms (pants, skirt, shorts) 2 1 Wear the heaviest pair, usually jeans
Underwear 7 1 Washed on laundry day
Socks 6 pairs 1 pair Thin socks dry faster in a sink
Sweater or fleece 0 1 Planes run cold anyway
Light jacket or rain shell 0 1 Pockets hold your phone and passport
Sleepwear 1 set 0 Can double as a lounge outfit
Dressier outfit 1 0 A dress, or one shirt that works with your pants
Shoes 1 pair 1 pair Wear the bulkier walking shoes
Swimsuit 1 (optional) 0 Only if you'll really use it
Toiletries 1 quart-sized bag 0 Containers of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less
Laundry kit 1 0 Detergent sheets, a few clothespins, a stretchy line
Chargers and adapter 1 pouch 0 One cable per device type

The liquids rule comes from TSA: travel-sized containers of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less, in a quart-sized bag (tsa.gov, checked Oct 2026).

How to pack 2 weeks in a carry-on, step by step

  1. Pick a color plan. Two neutrals plus one accent. Every top should work with every bottom. What goes wrong: one "just in case" pattern that matches nothing, so you pack a second piece to go with it.
  2. Lay everything out and cut 20%. Count against the table above. What goes wrong: a third pair of shoes. Shoes take more space than any clothing item, and they don't compress.
  3. Roll soft items, fold stiff ones. T-shirts, knits and sleepwear roll tight. Blazers and button-downs fold flat on top. What goes wrong: rolling linen, which comes out creased.
  4. Compress the clothes you won't need first. Days 4 to 7 go into a compression cube or vacuum section. What goes wrong: sealing tomorrow's outfit and having to open everything at the hotel.
  5. Shoes and toiletries go in last, along the edges. Stuff socks inside the shoes. Keep the liquids bag on top so it comes out at security in one move.
  6. Weigh and walk. Put the packed bag on, walk around the block, and weigh it on a bathroom scale. What goes wrong: finding out at the gate that a dense bag is heavier than you thought.

Rolling, compression cubes or vacuum compression?

Rolling is free and works for almost everything soft. Compression cubes squeeze a bit more by zipping down.

Vacuum compression removes the air, which matters most for bulky layers. Our cubes vs vacuum bags vs vacuum backpack comparison goes deeper on the tradeoffs.

Where vacuum compression helps, and where it doesn't

Helps a lot Helps a little Doesn't help
Sweaters, fleece, puffy jackets Jeans, cotton t-shirts Shoes
Sleepwear and lounge clothes Dress shirts (and they'll crease) Toiletries and liquids
Clean clothes for the second week Thin synthetic tops that already pack small Laptop, chargers, anything you need daily

Two honest limits. Compression doesn't make anything lighter, so a fuller bag is a heavier bag.

And you need the pump with you to compress again after laundry day. If your trip is two weeks of summer clothes, rolling alone may be enough.

What should you wear on the plane?

Your heaviest, bulkiest items: jeans or the warmest pants, walking shoes, the sweater, and the jacket. That one choice frees up more bag space than any packing trick. A jacket with zip pockets also keeps your passport and phone on you through boarding.

How do you do laundry on a 2-week trip?

Pick one of two plans before you leave:

  • One big wash around day 7. A laundromat, a hotel laundry service, or an apartment rental with a washer. Look this up when you book, not when you run out.
  • Sink washes every 2 to 3 days. Underwear, socks and a top in the sink with a detergent sheet, hung overnight. Merino and thin synthetics usually dry by morning. Cotton often doesn't.

If you use vacuum compression, plan to reseal clean clothes right after laundry day, while you're still at the hotel with a charged pump.

Packing 2 weeks with the Air Pro

The Air Pro vacuum compression backpack comes in two sizes. The 19-inch version is a carry-on (overhead) size bag. The 17-inch version measures 17 x 12.6 x 6 to 8 inches, which is within an 18 x 14 x 8 inch personal-item limit based on published dimensions, as long as the depth stays at 8 inches or less.

Flovir says it fits 10 days of clothes. For a 14-day trip, that's the 7-day list above with room to spare, plus one laundry stop.

The bag has a separate shoe compartment, so shoes don't sit on top of clean clothes, and the rechargeable pump is included. It costs from $149 and weighs 3.5 to 4 lb empty.

Flying with it? Read what TSA says about vacuum-sealed bags first. TSA allows them, but may open one if it alarms (tsa.gov, checked Oct 2026).

Before you pack: check what counts as a personal item on your airline, read up on whether vacuum bags reduce weight if your airline weighs bags, and see our tips on choosing a travel backpack for women over 50 if comfort on your back matters most.

FAQ

How many outfits do I need for 2 weeks?

About seven: six tops and three bottoms (one of each worn) mix into more than seven outfits. Add one dressier option. Laundry once covers the second week.

Can you pack for 2 weeks in a personal item only?

It's possible with thin clothes, two laundry stops and one pair of shoes. Most people find it tight. American Airlines, for example, limits a personal item to 18 x 14 x 8 inches, so check your airline first.

Do vacuum bags work for carry-on luggage?

Yes, for saving space. They don't reduce weight, and TSA notes they may be opened at screening, so bring the pump to reseal them.

Should I roll or fold clothes in a carry-on?

Roll soft clothes like t-shirts, knits and sleepwear. Fold stiff or crease-prone items, like blazers and button-down shirts, and lay them flat on top.
