Vacuum Backpack as a Personal Item: Fitting 18 x 14 x 8

18 x 14 x 8 inches is the free personal-item limit on Spirit, Frontier, Allegiant and American. A vacuum backpack qualifies only if its outside size fits that box, because compression shrinks the clothes, not the bag. Only the 17-inch Air Pro is within 18 x 14 x 8; the 19-inch is a carry-on.

The rest of this page covers what the number means, which airlines use it and where vacuum compression helps. It also covers where compression doesn't help, and how the Air Pro compression backpack lines up, based on published dimensions only.

What does 18 x 14 x 8 mean?

It's the largest box your bag may fill: 18 inches long, 14 inches wide and 8 inches deep (45 x 35 x 20 cm on the airlines that list centimeters). Spirit measures with handles and wheels included, and Frontier adds straps.

The box holds 2,016 cubic inches, about 33 liters. A soft bag never uses all of that, because the fabric, padding and straps take space too.

Of the three numbers, depth is the one that trips people up. Length and width are mostly set by how the bag is sewn. Depth depends on how full you pack it.

Which airlines use an 18 x 14 x 8 personal item limit?

As of October 2026, four US airlines publish exactly 18 x 14 x 8 inches. Several others are close but smaller.

Airline Personal item limit Free carry-on on the cheapest fare? Source (checked Oct 2026)
Spirit 18 x 14 x 8 in No (Value fare) Spirit Bag Info
Frontier 18 x 14 x 8 in, up to 35 lb No Frontier Bag Options
Allegiant 18 x 14 x 8 in No Allegiant fees
American 18 x 14 x 8 in Yes (Basic Economy) American carry-on
Breeze, JetBlue 17 x 13 x 8 in Breeze no, JetBlue yes Breeze, JetBlue
Avelo, Sun Country 17 x 13 x 9 in Avelo no; Sun Country says fees may apply Avelo, Sun Country contract
United 17 x 10 x 9 in No on most routes (Basic Economy) United carry-on

The full list, including Delta, Southwest, Alaska and five international carriers, is in our personal item size by airline chart.

The 18 x 14 x 8 limit matters most on Spirit, Frontier and Allegiant. Their cheapest fares include no carry-on, so the personal item is the only free bag.

Why does vacuum compression help you fit more in that box?

Folded clothes are mostly air. A sweater, a fleece or a pile of T-shirts takes up far more room than the fabric itself needs.

A regular backpack holds that air in. Pack it full and it bulges in the middle, which pushes the depth past 8 inches even when the bag's printed size says 8.

Compression packing cubes squeeze some of the air out with a zipper. A vacuum compartment pulls it out with a pump and then seals.

On the Air Pro, you pack clothes into the vacuum-seal compartment, attach the included rechargeable pump to the valve and let it pull the air out. Flovir says packing or unpacking takes about 1 to 2 minutes, and that compression doubles your space. That's the brand's claim, not an independent test.

What you gain isn't extra volume beyond the box. You get more clothes inside the same box, with the depth held flat instead of bulging.

What are the limits of a vacuum backpack as a personal item?

Compression solves one problem. Here is what it doesn't solve.

Weight stays the same

Ten pounds of clothes still weigh ten pounds after the air is gone. Frontier caps the personal item at 35 pounds. The Air Pro itself weighs 3.5 to 4 pounds empty, and that counts too.

The outside size doesn't shrink below the bag's frame

The Air Pro's depth runs from 6 to 8 inches. Compression helps keep it at or under 8, but the length and width are fixed: 17 x 12.6 inches on the smaller size and 19 x 12.6 on the larger. No pump makes a 19-inch bag 18 inches long.

Outside pockets still count

The vacuum only works on the sealed compartment. A stuffed front pocket or a bottle in the side pocket adds to the outside size, and the airline measures the outside.

Repacking needs the pump

To compress again for the trip home, you need the pump and a charge. It's included in the box, and Flovir sells a second pump as an add-on for $29.95.

Wrinkles and access

Some fabrics crease under vacuum. And since your clothes sit in one sealed compartment, taking out a single shirt means opening the seal. Keep what you'll need on the plane in a separate pocket.

Which Air Pro size fits 18 x 14 x 8?

This is a comparison of published dimensions. We have not run either size through an airline sizer.

Size Published dimensions 18 x 14 x 8 personal item Typical 22 x 14 x 9 carry-on
Air Pro 17-inch 17 x 12.6 x 6 to 8 in (43 x 32 x 15 to 20 cm) Within the limit. Depth equals 8 in at full expansion Within the limit
Air Pro 19-inch 19 x 12.6 x 6 to 8 in (49 x 32 x 15 to 20 cm) Over by 1 inch of length Within the limit

To be plain about it: only the 17-inch fits an 18 x 14 x 8 personal-item limit. The 19-inch is a carry-on bag, meant for the overhead bin.

A verified buyer, Joel P., wrote that the 19-inch "fit perfectly under the airplane seat" on a short trip to Miami. Under-seat space differs by aircraft, so that can happen. On Spirit, Frontier, Allegiant or American, though, a 19-inch bag is over the published limit, and the agent at boarding decides.

Both sizes start at $149 and include a padded laptop sleeve (fits a 16-inch MacBook Pro) and a built-in TSA combination lock.

Who a vacuum backpack is not for

If your trips are short and a regular backpack already closes without bulging, compression adds a step you don't need. If you're close to a weight limit, it won't help, because it saves space only. And if you want to reach into your bag all day without unsealing anything, a plain backpack with packing cubes is simpler.

FAQ

Can a vacuum backpack be used as a personal item?

Yes, if its outside dimensions are within the airline's personal-item limit. The airline pages we checked define a personal item by size and examples (purse, small backpack, laptop bag), not by how the bag compresses.

Is 18 x 14 x 8 the same as 45 x 35 x 20 cm?

That's how Spirit, American and Allegiant list it. The exact conversion is about 45.7 x 35.6 x 20.3 cm, so the airlines round down slightly.

Does vacuum compression reduce weight?

No. It removes air, which takes up space but weighs almost nothing. Your bag weighs the same before and after.

Can I take a vacuum-sealed bag through TSA?

We cover what to expect at security in can you bring vacuum-sealed bags through TSA.

If the 17-inch fits the airlines you fly, you can compare both sizes on the Air Pro product page.
